چکیده

Multihoming is one of the most attractive features of stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) aiming to make this prosperous transport scheme competitive in mobile environments when the mobile hosts are equipped with multiple interfaces. The complementary characteristic of the 3G universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) and wireless local area network (WLAN) architectures motivates operators to integrate these two successful technologies. Recently spreading wireless devices are increasingly provided with multiple networking interfaces such enabling end-users to access internet services using e.g., the WLAN’s higher bandwidth wherever available, and connecting to the UMTS network in other cases. This paper investigates the performance of multihomed SCTP hosts through extensive experimental studies in such an integrated heterogeneous environment. In order to do this, we designed and implemented a real native IPv6 UMTS-WLAN testbed equipped with novel IPv6-based mobile technologies, such providing ideal conditions for SCTP multihoming performance analysis. In this testbed architecture we analysed numerous settings to measure the handover behaviour of the protocol in terms of handover effectiveness, link changeover characteristics, throughput and transmission delay. As our results show, accurate SCTP parameter setup can significantly decrease the handover delay and eliminate the data transmission interrupts.

A new method to support UMTS/WLAN vertical handover using SCTP

This paper proposes a new method to facilitate seamless vertical handover (VHO) between UMTS and WLAN networks using the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). The multi-homing capability and dynamic address reconfiguration (DAR) extension of SCTP are applied in a UMTS/WLAN overlay architecture to decrease VHO delay and improve throughput performance. Unlike techniques based on Mobile IP ...

An Analysis of the Performance of an MIH Based Switch Strategy for Heterogeneous Network Mobility

The increasingly ubiquitous deployment of wireless networks has created significant opportunities for mobile application developers. The availability of highcapacity, low financial cost networks has the potential to enable mobile application developers to offer feature-rich end-user-oriented product offerings. Standardisation efforts such as Media Independent Handover (MIH) will support this tr...

Performance Comparison of IPv6 Multihoming and Mobility Protocols

Multihoming and mobility protocols enable computing devices to stay always best connected (ABC) to the Internet. The focus of our study is on handover latency and rehoming time required by such protocols. We used simulations in OMNeT++ to study the performance of the following protocols that support multihoming, mobility or a combination thereof: Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6), Multiple Care-of Address Re...

Experimental Performance Studies of SCTP in Wireless Access Networks*

The Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) is a new general-purpose transport layer protocol developed by the IETF. Compared with TCP, SCTP has two distinct features: multi-homing and multi-stream. Our work investigates the SCTP performance in various network environments, and its availability for different applications. This paper proposes a SCTP multi-homing scheme as the transport layer...

SCTP-multihoming for intra and inter-RAT data handover management

SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) provides interesting features, as multihoming and multistreaming, to enhance information transport performances over air interfaces. Additional extensions have been proposed to adapt SCTP to wireless context (mSCTP: mobile SCTP). However, published approaches do not take into account channel state information during handover processes. The present wor...
